El 19 de noviembre se celebra el Día del Asentamiento Garifuna

Joseph Chatoyer es considerado un héroe nacional dentro de la comunidad garifuna tanto en Belize como a nivel regional. Surgió como líder durante las Guerras del Caribe, contra las franceses y británicos, en la década de 1770.

Gulisi, era la hija del cacique Joseph Chatoyer quien viajó en la travesía realizada durante el exilio masivo de San Vicent en 1797. Fundó el pueblo de Punta Negra y estaba decidida a no perder su herencia cultural.

La Escuela Primaria Comunitaria Gulisi y el Museo Gulisi, en Dangriga, son solo algunos de los lugares que se han dedicado a su memoria.

Alejo Beni, fue uno de los 5000 Garinagus del exilio masivo de San Vicente y el 19 de noviembre de 1832 llevó al grupo a Dangriga. Según la legendaria historia de su muerte, se dice que murió en un extraño accidente mientras cortaba un árbol. Estaba cortando un pequeño árbol en el área detrás de su aldea, cuando en un día tranquilo, de repente llegó una fuerte ráfaga de viento que partió el árbol medio cortado por la mitad. Alejo escuchó el crujido y saltó detrás del árbol esperando que el árbol cayera donde fue cortado. Extrañamente el árbol cayó contra el corte y, sin tiempo para correr, fue aplastado contra el suelo.

Thomas Vincent Ramos nació en Puerto Cortez, Honduras en 1887 y en 1923 se mudó a Stann Creek Town (Dangriga). En 1943 Ramos hizo una solicitud al gobernador británico donde solicitaba: “Que el 19 de noviembre sea sancionado como feriado público” en cumplimiento de la llegada de los Garinagu. El 19 de noviembre de 1943 se celebró por primera vez en el distrito de Stann Creek, oficial y públicamente, el Día del Desembarco del Caribe y, posteriormente, en el distrito de Toledo.

Joseph Chatoyer is regarded as a national hero within the Garifuna community both in Belize and regionally. He emerged as a great leader during the Carib Wars of the 1770’s against the French and British.

Gulisi, was the daughter of Chief Joseph Chatoyer who traveled on the journey during the mass exile from St. Vicent in 1797. She founded the village of Punta Negra. She was determined not to lose her cultural heritage.

The Gulis Community Primary School and the Gulis Museum in Dangriga are just a few places that have been dedicated.

Alejo Beni was one of the 5000 Garinagu in the mass exile from St. Vincent. On November 19th, 1832 he led the group to Dangriga. According to the legendary tale of his death it is said that he died in a freak accident while cutting down a tree. He was cutting down a small tree in the area behind his village when on a quiet day suddenly came a strong gust of wind that it snapped the half cut tree in half. The Alejo heard the crack he leapt behind the tree expecting that the tree would have fallen where it was cut. Strangely the tree fell against the cut and with no time to run he was crushed to the ground.

En 1943 Ramos made a request to the British Governor: “That 19th November be sanctioned as a Public Holiday” in observance of the arrival of the Garinagu on November 19yh, 1943. The first official public and bank holiday celebration of the Carib Disembarkment Day was celebrated in the Stann Creek District and later in the Toledo District.
